Bob's Picks - Take the Bears, the Ducks, the Trojans, the Dores and anyone but the Bruins
Aggies face a stiff home test Saturday against Southern Utah, but will prevail
Well, here we are three weeks into the college football season and two major college head coaches - at UCLA and Virginia Tech - have already been fired.
Athletic directors never like to fire football coaches, especially if they're the ones who hired them in the first place. Obviously, no one likes admitting to making bad and sometimes costly mistakes.
But firing a head coach early in the season is a drastic measure, because it pretty much means you've given up on this season with 9 or 10 games still to play and half the team is already looking into their options in the transfer portal.
UCLA, which bolted to the Big Ten because it thought it was too good for the Pac-12, is considering moving down to the Delta League, where Davis High School used to compete until recently.
However, Delta League officials declined to offer a spot to the Bruins after that 35-10 loss to New Mexico, a setback that was worse than the score might indicate.
Fortunately, UCLA has a bye this weekend that it hopes will extend to the end of November.
Makes me wonder if anyone in Westwood is questioning why on earth they ever left their exceedingly comfortable home in the Pac-12?
This week's picks are as follows:
CAL over SAN DIEGO STATE ... The Golden Bears are the pleasant surprise of the college football season. The Bears might not be playoff bound, but a bowl bid of some sort certainly appears likely.
VIRGINIA OVER STANFORD ... Surprise, surprise, the Big Bad Tree finally has a win under its belt. Can the Mighty Cardinal make it two in a row? Don't bet the rent on it, folks.
USC over MICHIGAN STATE ... The University of Spoiled Children continues its Save-the-Coach's-Job campaign against the outmanned Spartans.
