The Wary One

Davis has changed dramatically over the years into the town many of us love today

Is the conversion of prime ag land a reason to oppose Measure V?

There was a time when the city of Davis, our charming little Carmel-by-the-Causeway, thought that Richard Nixon would make a better president than John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

You can look it up.

In the presidential election of 1960, I was a student at Davis Junior High School and was asked to lead the “Kennedy for President” campaign in our school’s mock political convention.

I was selected because I was Catholic, the belief in our school being that only Catholics could vote for such a person.

Try as I might, our side got trounced by a 2-to-1 margin, the students basically reflecting how their parents would vote for real come Election Day.

But time passes and small towns change.
