Davis memories: Foster's Freeze and so much more
Our town has grown, but in my heart has remained much the same
The other day someone asked me where Foster's Freeze used to be in Davis.
It didn't take long for me to come up with the answer, but I was surprised and overwhelmed by the wave of nostalgia that suddenly washed over me.
No, I don't want to go back to that special town our family moved to in 1951, with a population of just over 3,000 where seemingly everyone knew everyone else's first name. But I do still remember it fondly.
That special town is now 25 times larger than the day we arrived, the university has 40 times as many students and Foster's Freeze has literally melted away, never to return.
So much for our reputation as a no-growth city.
Some things, of course, haven't changed at all since the day we arrived here from Portland on my fifth birthday, our family of seven significantly increasing the town's population.
It's still hot in summer and foggy in winter and every 20 years or so we manage to get a little bit of snow.
