Epps tosses in 20 as Aggie women rout Weber State, 75-52
UC Davis overcomes slow start to win its third straight to start the season
OGDEN, Utah - Nya Epps had 20 points as UC Davis opened the first of six straight road games with an impressive 75-52 win over Weber State in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Dee Events Center Wednesday night.
Epps was hot from the floor all night, hitting 7 of 11 field goal attempts, including 4 of 6 from long range. She also added four rebounds and two steals to her night’s work.
Added to home wins over Jessup and Idaho to open the season, the Aggies are now 3-0 on the young season. Weber State, out of the Big Sky Conference, fell to 1-2.
Things started poorly for the Aggies as their hosts ran out to a 9-0 lead before Ryan Bennett finally broke UCD’s scoring drought with a bucket at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter.
A few minutes later, Epps keyed a 9-0 Aggie run for a 16-14 UCD lead, tying the game with a trey and adding two free throws.
From that point on, UCD was in full control, taking a 32-26 lead into the break, then blowing the game open with a 27-16 explosion in the third quarter. Another 3-pointer from Epps closed the quarter with the Aggies up, 59-42.
Bennett added 16 points for the Aggies, while Avery Sussex had 15. Megan Norris had nine rebounds and eight points as nine Aggies broke into the scoring column.
UCD continues its road trip with a Friday night date at Boise State, then heads to Stanford November 20 and Sacramento State Nov. 24.
After games against Jacksonville State and Milwaukee in Stockton at UOP’s Tiger Turkey Tip-Off Nov. 28-29, the Aggies come home December 4 at 6 p.m. to open Big West play against Hawaii.
