Fisher, Vargas run wild as Aggies overwhelm Southern Utah, 50-34
Record crowd is not disappointed as UC Davis wins home opener
Some college football programs try to entice fans to turn out by promising a post-game fireworks show.
At UC Davis they flipped the script before a record crowd Saturday night by providing fireworks during the game with a series of explosive plays that led to an impressive 50-34 win over a talented but outmanned Southern Utah squad.
Before a record UC Davis Health Stadium crowd of 17,217 that eclipsed the previous record by nearly 2,400 fans, the Aggie offense was virtually unstoppable, while the defense came up with some key second-half stops to subdue a spirited SUU rally that kept the game close for a while.
The win gives the Aggies a 2-1 mark heading into this Saturday's Big Sky opener at home against Weber State, while the Thunderbirds out of Cedar City fell to 1-3.
It was hard to tell afterward if Aggie head coach Tim Plough was more excited about the victory or the size of the crowd.
