The Wary One

Fog, rain, sleet, snow, there's nothing "normal" about our weather

TV weather folks seem a bit alarmed by our recent abnormal foggy, foggy dew

Okay, I’ve about had enough.

I figure I’ve lived here long enough to understand the weather.

There may indeed be global warming that affects our area, but now that the sun seems to have permanently disappeared behind an especially thick bank of tule fog, it seems as if global cooling is more the order of the day.

I was a complete weather nut while growing up in this town, keeping a daily log of temperatures from my own outdoor thermometer and rainfall from my makeshift gauge fashioned from a wide-open Crystal half-gallon milk carton.

I read somewhere that if you placed a thermometer flat on the ground on a winter night and another thermometer three feet off the ground, the one on the ground would regularly report a substantially lower temperature.

I found that hard to believe, since my fingers and toes always felt about the same when I was outside on a winter night, so I put the claim to a simple test.

Off I went to Davis Lumber on my ‘56 Schwinn to fetch a second thermometer and I was in business.

Lo and behold, the claim was correct. I couldn’t figure out why that was so, but there was no arguing with the result.

But I guess that’s why they have windmills in orchards and vineyards to keep the warmer air circulating with the colder to keep the fruit safe.

So what have I had enough of?
