Here’s your chance to have a say in renaming Cesar Chavez Elementary
The Davis School Board has put out a call for suggestions, so here are mine
“So,” someone asked me the other day in the checkout line at Nugget, “have they come up with a new name for Cesar Chavez Elementary?”
Short answer: no.
Long answer: the Davis School Board has appointed an “ad hoc” committee of 15 brave souls to argue about this and come up with a name that is both right and relevant.
It’s the Davis way.
This is not to be confused with the 15-member “add hock” committee charged with adding pork to the school lunch menu.
Generally, elected officials appoint committees to do the dirty work when they don’t want to get blamed for the results.
Be that as it may, I’ll admit before we get started that I don’t like changing school names.
I was in the first class at West Davis Elementary and was proud of that name, generic as it may be.
I had previously attended Central Davis School where they now sell rutabaga on Saturday mornings. That name, too, was generic, but we loved it nonetheless.
At the same time that West Davis Elementary opened, on the opposite side of the tracks we welcomed East Davis Elementary. That name, however, was soon changed to Valley Oak to avoid the “stigma” of attending school in East Davis. I am not making this up.
