It may be time for a short and simple Easter message
Words to live by whether or not you're a believer
I'm taking a day of rest on Good Friday.
But I'd like to share one of my favorite Bible passages for all our friends in Washington, D.C. of every political persuasion.
Matthew 25: 35-37
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.
Thank you for sharing. Given that the MAGA administration and voters seem to use the Bible so heavily to justify their choices, i wonder if we read the same book. Verses i have been meditating on:
- Deuteronomy 27:19 (NIV): "Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.”
- Exodus 12:49 (in the Passover context): "The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.” => In the current political climate, there are laws that are said to be the same for the citizen and the legal resident, and they have been disregarded, people have been arrested and not just deported, but jailed in a foreign country. Undocumented residents have rights too, at the very least as human beings, and we know what has been happening on that front.
- Zechariah 7:9-10: "This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’
Happy Easter or Resurrection Weekend to those who celebrate.
Quite true. But that's true for every one of us, not just those in Washington DC. And it is calling for a personal commitment, our own time and our own dime, recognizing that all of our time, and all of our money is a gift from God. We're only stewards. The question is: will we be good and faithful stewards?
