Panic in Seattle as heat wave hits 90 degrees
A string of incredibly helpful tips to beat the heat - even in Davis
Because it's a truly excellent newspaper in a day and age when many newspapers are in steep decline, I subscribe to The Seattle Times just in case Mount St. Helen's decides to blow its top once again and a north wind kicks up to blow all that dirty ash our way.
Hey, it could happen.
Well, the other day, even as St. Helen's was apparently behaving itself, another act of Mother Nature was threatening one of the West Coast's most beautiful cities.
"First heat wave of 2025," said the headline in The Seattle Times.
Apparently, the thermometer was threatening to hit 90 degrees, which might bring the waters of Puget Sound to a full boil.
Yes, 90 whopping degrees, a temperature that here in the Central Valley of California might cause the natives to put on a sweatshirt before heading outdoors.
Okay, okay, 90 degrees is not exactly freezing, no matter where you live, but in my hometown it wouldn't cause any of us to even consider turning on the air conditioning.
In Seattle, however, many folks don't have air conditioning, and they can't head for the coast because they're already on the coast.
Put simply, 90 degrees in Seattle is enough to make the fishmongers at Pike Place Market stop throwing 40-pound King salmon back and forth to entertain wide-eyed tourists from Topeka.
Noted The Times, "Temperatures in the mid to upper 80s are still expected in the Seattle area after Sunday broke records for the hottest June 8 in almost 80 years."
Yep, the mercury hit 90 in Seattle.
