With defense leading the way, UC Davis regained its winning ways with a convincing 71-54 Big West Conference men’s basketball victory over Long Beach State Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 1,317 at the University Credit Union Center.

The win was UCD’s fourth in the last five games and was especially satisfying after a disappointing loss Thursday night at UC San Diego.

The Aggies are now 9-6 in Big West play and 16-10 overall with five games remaining in the regular season.

Long Beach slips to 4-10 and 8-18 with its seventh straight loss in league play.

The top eight teams will earn a bid to the Big West tournament next month in Henderson, Nevada, with the winner there moving on to the NCAA’s Big Dance.

The top two finishers in the regular season earn a double bye in Henderson, while third and fourth finishers earn a single bye.

The single-elimination tournament starts March 11 when No. 8 meets No. 5, and No. 7 plays No. 6.
