I was there that day and it was an epic confrontation. I note that Bob failed to report that Riggs was 59 years old. The match amounted to elder abuse.
I was new to Davis when that occurred, so I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, and now I'm dying to know what happened. I hope it will be in tomorrow's column!!!!! This is a WONDERFUL story, Bob
I love this story! Can’t believe that I missed the spectacle, but I’m not surprised you won as I saw you playing back then. Great column. (The exclamation mark was proper in this instance.)
Hi Bob, Come on now, you can’t end this article without saying what happened and who played well. I’m sure you did, but you have to give me info on how you scored and if you won a single match. Take care and I will talk with you again soon.
i know what happened :)
Indeed you do

Epic sideburns are the real heroes of this story
I was truly a trendsetter, Ted. Way ahead of my time.
Don't leave us hanging, Bob. I want the blow by blow. (I did see Ricketts reference). 😂
As exactly predicted by Roger Rickette: Dunning defeats Riggs 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (5-3 in tiebreaker).
The tiebreaker at the time was 9 points, with first one to five winning. Did not have to win by two points, as with today's.
Tiebreaker was tied at 3-3, but I won the last two points.
Excellent....your usual wise-ass personality probably unglued him with the roses 🥰

Was a fun dady
Exclamation point accepted.
"...as if I'd just stuck in a fork into a light socket." How could you lose?
It was probably cheating to be electrified, Sherri
I remember it well! It was a momentus event in the family history! ....
Amen to that.
Never gets old! Shared with Don Lay!
Thanks Janet.
Hugs to you and Don
Don very impressed with your smash. WELL Done.
He wants to hear the play-by-play point by point!
Ahhha that was fun to watch!
I could hear your voice in the crowd, Rene
Very nice photos (specially the one with your son).
He's a good looking kid
That's it?
I beat him in 1974. No problem.
I had a bet on you, Jack

Great story, Bob, but please don’t leave us in suspense. Lovely photo of you and your adorable son.
