...but he didn’t ask anyone to pray for the families of the 175 schoolchildren who will no longer be going home to Mom and Dad.....
.....He never once told a war story after returning home to Portland and he never once mentioned the medals he was awarded for his valor in combat or the injuries he received while serving his country...
Dear Mr. Dunning, you don't often write about national or international affairs in your interesting Substack, but today's issue is both well-written and an excellent summary of where we are as a nation at this moment. Given your excellent writing style and comprehension of the most important issues of our time, I would hope you would write more often about such issues. I am not sure why I subscribed to your Substack since I have never visited Davis, but I was enchanted by the way you describe life in that interesting community, and I would like to write as well as you on my own Substack. The newspaper for which you wrote for most of your career lost a treasure when you left, but you have more than made up for it by reaching an even larger audience. Keep it up! We need more voices like yours.
Excellent Column, Bob. My oldest sister was born on Christmas Day in 1944, and she too came home to Mom only. Our Dad was in the Marines in the Japan area of World War II. He was on Iwo Jima and also never talked about the war. Thank you again for your wonderful writing.

One of your best ever. There are no words for this situation, but you found the words. God Bless!
God Bless you too, Gayna.
Such troubling times.
Pray for the innocents whose lives are being destroyed by insane person(s)...
So true, Drew. So incredibly sad.
Integrity remains the same throughout the ages.
Indeed it does, Patsy. Thank you

Peacekeepers are heroes…and the true heroes are peacekeepers…yet, by nature, they will speak of their actions…
…meant to say, “they will not speak of their actions.”
Absolutely correct. Very rare for a WWII vet to ever brag. Do the job and come home
