You know, had the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against birthright citizenship late last month, Donald Trump would have been deporting Folarin Balogun instead of making him eligible to play for the United States in a World Cup Round of 16 contest in Seattle against Belgium.

Our dear president, who doesn’t know a red card from a red state, thought he was going to be a hero for American soccer fans everywhere. He instead ended up being a goat. (And I do not mean the Greatest of All Time.)

Not only did he embarrass the home team, he inspired the opposition to turn in one of the best performances of the current World Cup.

In soccer terms, Trump’s intervention was a dreaded “own goal” in the worst understanding of the term.
