Unbeaten Stanford women run away to a convincing 70-45 win over UC Davis
Cold shooting dooms Aggies early in non-conference basketball loss at Maples Pavilion
STANFORD ... Venturing into the ACC, UC Davis suffered through a cold-shooting experience and dropped a 70-45 decision to unbeaten Stanford in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night before a crowd of 2,228 in Maples Pavilion.
Stanford is now 6-0, while the Aggies drop to 3-2.
Both teams had trouble finding the hoop in the early going as it took Stanford nearly three minutes to open the scoring on a 3-pointer from Lara Somfai.
The Aggies needed almost another minute before cutting the deficit to 3-2 on a bucket by Tegan Young.
Stanford quickly ran away to a 15-8 lead at the quarter, then started the second period on a 10-3 run to erase all doubt about the final outcome.
The Aggies managed just 22.4 percent accuracy from the field, despite Ryann Bennett’s phenomenal 5 for 5 night from 3-point land, including a buzzer-beating halfcourt hit at the end of the third quarter.
Bennett led everyone on the floor with 19 points, while Megan Norris added 13. No other Aggie had more than four points.
Nunu Agara led Stanford with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
The Aggies will be at Sacramento State Monday at 6:30 p.m. for more non-conference action, then head for two games at the Tiger Turkey Tip-Off Nov. 28 and 29 at UOP in Stockton.
UCD will meet Jacksonville State on Friday and Milwaukee on Saturday, with both games set for a 1 p.m. start.
The Aggies open Big West play Dec. 4 at home against Hawaii at 6 p.m.
